Subject: Expanded metal and airflow restriction question.Hi all. Just a quick question about expanded metal. (see attached picture for a very poor example ) I would like to find info about air restriction through this type of formed metal. Is there any kind of website that has a chart or is there any math formulas that I can aquire to figure it out? I know I can find a formula for figuring the amount of surface area and opening areas of the metal, but I think there is a.........................uh,............................dang, I hate it when my brain quits on me in the middle of a thought..;- ( grrrr!! I'm thinking there is a "shear" factor or something like that that has to be figured into this when there is an open void on the back side of the sheet of metal. ?

From my memory of my class of mechanics of fluids, air is considered a fluid.  To get a fluid to flow there had to be a differential of pressure from one side to the other.  In your case it is probably a fan pulling air through the radiator.  The Venturi  Principle would apply.  Each hole would act like a venturi.  The principle of the venturi states that the fluid will speed up as it goes through the venturi and slow down after it gets through.  So in your case, the expanded metal screen will basically not restrict flow at all.

NW WashingtonI am sure that the restriction caused by the radiator fins is going to much greater than that caused by the expanded metal which would make it a non-issue for air flow restriction. You could look closely at a small area, a couple inches square, figure out the open area and then expand it to the entire area of the screen. If you think you need more area you could make it a 3 sided box arrangement in front of the radiator to get more total surface area.


South Western OntarioWhat's with the dog in that picture?i happen to work at a mfg. in the testing area , When there is a question on air flow thru screen a air velicity meter is used ( a hot wire ananomoneter ) .There is a line that has to be drawn, keeping debry out or restricting air flow. a quick rule is more screen the better (less volume at certain points ) and try to keep the screen around .06 to .09 size, Air velocity after the fan ,lower the better.want the debry to stickto the screen instead of being pulled into the rad.and cooler fins. MY TWO CENTS

I dont think money could get me to let go of Bentley.That sorta follows the line of thinking I picked up looking at car and pickup grills. That extra space on the sides of the radiator is a huge air volume resource. The sprayers like I pictured, have only the front section about the width of the radiator for air inlet. So what I need then is simply more expanded metal surface. Or a greater area of openings to let more air in. Sort of a balance.
