The Dual Perimeter Electric Fence
The Dual Perimeter Electric Fence
The game changer for anyone that is interested in protecting your hard work such as food plots and tree plantings from being over browsed by deer and other wildlife is the Dual Perimeter Electric Fence. This is a relatively new way of protecting your investment in the hunting world. I would like to share my journey transitioning from having no electric fence setup to the successful installation I have today.

As a wildlife and habitat manager for my consulting business and my family's property, it has always been a dream of mine to oversee a stand of soybeans during the late-season. My research indicated that over-seeding soybeans at a 100-pound rate instead of the traditional 50 pounds per acre would leave sufficient stems for pods to develop, providing food for deer during harsh winter months. After preparing an acre and seeding the soybeans, I was initially pleased with the results; however, this joy was short-lived.
Underestimating Over-Browsing
By June, my food plot was decimated, and I was crushed. Determined, I enlisted a local farmer’s advice and tried again the following year with a new strategy. This time, I meticulously prepared the plot, sprayed for weeds, and fertilized before seeding.
Again, I over-seeded, mixing buckwheat with the soybeans to act as a nurse crop and protective measure against over-browsing, while also providing cover from potential predators. When late July arrived, the soybeans grew to around 20 inches, yet deer were still browsing them. Ultimately, I had to pivot and prepare for a brassica planting instead.
While the brassica plot proved fruitful and attracted deer sightings during the late season, I still craved a more nourishing food source rich in protein, fats, and oils for our deer herd. This led me to research a dual perimeter electric fence specifically designed for food plots.
How to Successfully Prevent Over-Browsing
In my pursuit to set up the electric fence, I had high hopes for this project. Initially, my father doubted my efforts; however, my father-in-law supported my vision. After dedicating many hours to watching videos and reading articles, it was time to purchase supplies and set up the electric fence. Here is a list of parts used to protect a three-quarter acre food plot.
Electric Fence Parts
• Solar Charger Fencer with a 6-volt battery (make sure to face South for best sunlight)
• Poly Wire Tape
• Poly Wire String not Tape
• 3/8 inch Fiberglass Fence Post
• Fence Post Insulators to hold the wire and tape on the post
• Grounding Rod

With the necessary components in hand, we installed the electric fence, starting with the inner fence comprised of two wire strings. Next, we measured three feet from the inner fence to establish a second outer fence utilizing poly wire tape. This two-layer design is the hallmark of the Dual Perimeter Electric Fence. Its function is to disrupt the deer’s depth perception, enticing them to investigate further. When a deer investigates, it often touches the fence and receives a pulse of electricity, teaching them to steer clear of your food plot or fruit trees until they’ve matured to withstand browsing pressure.
The success rate between the control soybeans versus those protected by the electric fence reveals an impressive 85%-90% success rate for the fenced-in soybeans, contrasted with just 10%-20% success for the control plots plagued by over-browsing.
Consequently, on my third attempt to plant soybeans, it was a triumphant success, and my family can now enjoy a robust stand of soybeans while supporting our deer herd through the challenging winter months.
