Mill-turn vs turn-mill? - Autodesk Community

Ok I've been hunting about for a couple of weeks now on & off... Is there a difference? Some say there is, but then explain it poorly & don't provide examples. Others say they are essentially the same thing.

I'm hoping someone in the know on this forum can enlighten me please?

I was under the impression that it depends on what the machine was originally confiugured from.  Mill turns are configured typically from lathes with milling capabilities.  A Turn-Mill was configured from a Mill that has turning capabilities like some of the 5 axis Mazaks and Okumas

I always thought it was if the control started as a mill control or a turning control. To me that’s what determines if it’s a mill or turn base.

The advent of mill/turn in the early eighties involved CNC lathes having milling drilling heads mounted on the turret along with normal turning tools. This has become more sophisticated but in essence they are lathes, sometimes  now with two turrets and work steadies.
Mazak came along on the scene and invented turn/mill machines. If you look at the early Integrex machines they are fitted with a Mazak M640 controller, a milling control. But if you look at the rest of the machine it has two spindles so basically its a milling machine (5 axis) with turning capabilities.
