[Q] What are the standard sizes for longspan shelving?
[A] Longspan shelving is available in frame heights of 2 metres, 2.5 metres or 3 metres with any size of beam from 95cm to 2.7 metres.
[Q] Do I need to have my existing racking inspected?
[A] Yes. There is a legal obligation for all employers to ensure their employees work in a safe environment. The relevant acts and regulations are the Health and Safety at Work Act () – Section 2, the Workplace, Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations , the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the HSE Warehouse and Storage Safety Guide HS (G) 76.
This legislation is designed to ensure all employers maintain their equipment to prevent dangerous faults such as damaged frames/post uprights, bent braces, deformed beams, missing beam locking pins or bolts, etc. which could cause serious injury if they left without any remedial action being taken.
[Q] Are there any regulations that my racking has to comply with?
[A] There are no regulations that specifically relate to racking. However, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA), and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations all have a statutory ‘duty of care’ that your business must operate safely which includes making sure any racking is fully maintained.
[Q] What are the key pieces of information I need to know when ordering racking?
[A] The most important aspect of using racking safely is understanding the load capacity. You need to know the materials the racking uses and how it is constructed to calculate how much weight each racking shelf can safely support.
You should also think about the amount of storage space you have available. Avoid trying to squeeze more racking into a space than it can safely accommodate. Height restrictions are also a factor that needs to be checked in the racking manufacturer’s installation guidelines. Never exceed the heights stipulated as this could result in the racking collapsing. Finally don’t forget to think about the machinery, forklifts for example, as well as the people using the space who should be able to move freely around the racking at all times.
[Q] Do you offer a racking planning service?
[A] Yes. Acerax offer a comprehensive range of fully integrated services that are designed to provide our customers with a ‘one stop shop’ for all their warehousing requirements. Unlike other suppliers we are totally committed to support our customers from their initial contact with us by providing planning and installation services as well as aftersales assistance for maintenance, repairs and racking inspections by our SEMA approved inspectors.
[Q] Do you supply any pre-used racking and components?
[A] Yes. Acerax buy racking and components from a range of sources and refurbish them for resale. This can save our customers a significant amount of money. However, you can rest assured that this doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality. Our pre-used racking is of the highest quality and meets all the relevant regulations.
[Q] Can Acerax move our racking to a new location?
[A] Yes. We offer a comprehensive racking removal and relocation service. If you are moving to a new location, we can safely disassemble your racking and install it in your new site with minimal disruption to your business. Just leaving everything to us.
[Q] Do you supply any additional items?
[A] Yes. In addition to racking and shelving Acerax can also supply a wide range of other products, such as locked cabinets and smoking shelters as well as a comprehensive selection of racking components for when you need replacements or want to expand your racking.
The Benefits of Using Longspan Shelving as a Storage System
Long-span shelving is a type of shelving system that uses a continuous beam as the main support structures rather than individual studs every few feet. This means long-span shelving can go around corners, close to walls and other objects, and have longer spans between supports. All units can be joined to a row and no attachment to the walls or ceiling.
While typically used for large and or bulky items that may not fit into traditional shelves, the warehouse racking system is typically used in industrial applications where a lot of transportation occurs or large items need to be stored.
Shelves on this type of system are supported by step beams, which can be adjusted based on the weight being carried by the metal panel shelf.
Why long-span storage is a better alternative to bulk storage?
The main advantage of long-span shelving over traditional shelves is its ability to hold heavier loads without breaking down or losing its strength over time, just as many traditional types of shelves do when they become worn out or damaged by wear and tear from exposure to moisture-causing chemicals.

Longspan shelving has quite a several advantages over other types of storage units:
-
Increased productivity
Longspan shelving allows for easy accessibility because you can move around at any time without having to worry about damaging any products stored on the shelves. This is especially beneficial if you have employees who are required to access certain products daily but who might not always be able to find their way around easily due to poor lighting conditions or poor visibility within the warehouse space.
-
Increased storage space
It helps to increase the amount of storage space you have in a warehouse or another area. The shelving system allows you to use the entire wall space for storage. You can stack boxes and other items on top of each other, which will allow for more space for future items.
This makes long-span shelving a great solution for warehouse owners who want to improve their efficiency and save money by not having to purchase additional storage units.
-
Easy assembly and flexibility
The assembling process of the Longspan shelving system is somewhat easy. It consists of uprights, beams and metal panel shelves. You can set up the uprights with bracing as frame and slot in the pair of beams in between both sides of 2 frames to the position of level you want and place metal panel shelves onto the pair of beams. You may do the same for each level.
-
Organisation
Another benefit is organisation. Longspan shelving allows you to organise products in an orderly fashion, so you know where everything is at all times. This helps prevent accidents from happening when someone accidentally knocks over a shelf full of heavy items.
-
Long-lasting material
A warehouse racking system is made using high-quality materials and will last for years without needing any repairs or replacements. There is no need to replace long-span shelves as often as other types of storage systems might require to continue working properly over time.
Optimising your storage shelving with Eastern Win
