[Q] What are the standard sizes for longspan shelving?

[A] Longspan shelving is available in frame heights of 2 metres, 2.5 metres or 3 metres with any size of beam from 95cm to 2.7 metres.

[Q] Do I need to have my existing racking inspected?

[A] Yes. There is a legal obligation for all employers to ensure their employees work in a safe environment. The relevant acts and regulations are the Health and Safety at Work Act () – Section 2, the Workplace, Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations , the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the HSE Warehouse and Storage Safety Guide HS (G) 76.
This legislation is designed to ensure all employers maintain their equipment to prevent dangerous faults such as damaged frames/post uprights, bent braces, deformed beams, missing beam locking pins or bolts, etc. which could cause serious injury if they left without any remedial action being taken.

[Q] Are there any regulations that my racking has to comply with?

[A] There are no regulations that specifically relate to racking. However, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA), and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations all have a statutory ‘duty of care’ that your business must operate safely which includes making sure any racking is fully maintained.

[Q] What are the key pieces of information I need to know when ordering racking?

[A] The most important aspect of using racking safely is understanding the load capacity. You need to know the materials the racking uses and how it is constructed to calculate how much weight each racking shelf can safely support.

You should also think about the amount of storage space you have available. Avoid trying to squeeze more racking into a space than it can safely accommodate. Height restrictions are also a factor that needs to be checked in the racking manufacturer’s installation guidelines. Never exceed the heights stipulated as this could result in the racking collapsing. Finally don’t forget to think about the machinery, forklifts for example, as well as the people using the space who should be able to move freely around the racking at all times.

Long-span shelving is a type of shelving system that uses a continuous beam as the main support structures rather than individual studs every few feet. This means long-span shelving can go around corners, close to walls and other objects, and have longer spans between supports. All units can be joined  to a row and no attachment to the walls or ceiling.
