Broke the cross-bearing on my PTO shaft for my rotary cutter. It was old and the yoke spread apart.

Any recommendations on shafts for a 54" length, smooth w/ 1/2" hole on implement end, 6 spline on a 42HP tractor?

Agrisupply seems to have the best prices but I'm not sure about their quality.   Aug 1, / Any pointers on PTO shafts? Where to buy, brand, etc. #2

I would think that the PTO shaft sold by Agri Supply or Tractor Supply would be from the same Chinese manufacturer. Most all gear boxes for rotary cutters come from China. I would expect the same thing concerning PTO shafts. The few times I have had to replace shafts I had to cut the shaft to fit my application. I would not be afraid to purchase it.   Aug 1, / Any pointers on PTO shafts? Where to buy, brand, etc. #3

Are you looking at replacing the whole assembly, or just replacement parts? I ordered a shaft from Agri Supply last year, and it was a factory Eurocardan part, which was made in Italy. I don't know about cross bearings, but the other parts they carry seem to be mostly factory parts, so I wouldn't be too worried.   Aug 1, / Any pointers on PTO shafts? Where to buy, brand, etc. #4

I'd buy Agri-Supply with no problem. In the past I bought expensive shafts from companies only to learn it's all the same stuff.   Aug 1, / Any pointers on PTO shafts? Where to buy, brand, etc. #5

Well Agri-Supply seems to have two "levels" of PTO shafts, black (cheaper) and yellow (usually labelled Eurocardan) but their descriptions are TERRIBLE
Gr6 1-3/8 6-Spl X 1-3/8 6-Spl
as an example. No length mentioned.

And how does one determine length? End to end of the yokes? Center of cross to center of cross?   Aug 1, / Any pointers on PTO shafts? Where to buy, brand, etc. #7

My experience is that the length given is from end to end of the yokes, with the shaft compressed. but that may not be true in all cases.

ok I've owned 4 or 5 tractors through the years. Every implement I've ever bought that needed a PTO shaft came with one.

today, I was tilling my garden spot getting ready to do something for the winter crop, and apparently my new LS tractor requires a longer PTO shaft than the old Ford that I've used this tiller with the last 4 years. It only overlapped about 3 inches, and it split out the end of the outer tube. This ones welded on, no pins to knock out and replace. by the time I buy some new tube and get it welded in, I'm not sure I'll have too much less than just buying a new shaft.

so, how do I tell what this one is, style I think is italian or european? and are there different sizes?

If you know the manufacturer of the tiller you can call and ask what series you should be running. Or maybe it’s in the manual. If that’s not possible take a look at this: https://www.paulbparts.com/wp-content/uploads//06/determining-your-pto-series.pdf   Sep 12, / PTO shafts.....need to be educated

ok thanks! I'll check that site. It's an agric tiller, I bought it used and don't have a manual, but should be easy enough to find online. I guess I should have thought of that, and I'm just more brain dead this afternoon than normal    Sep 12, / PTO shafts.....need to be educated #4

Also you might be surprised how hard it is to find certain drivelines at a decent price. I cut my tiller shaft too short (before coffee) and it had a shear bolt protection on the u joint where it will just spin if you hit a root and shear the bolt. I could not for the life of me find a good priced replacement. I usually use agrisupply for pto shafts but they didn’t carry it. Ended up buying new shaft and taking to machine shop to have them do the work which was much cheaper than the full replacement with the proper i joints etc. you might have better luck.

Agri-supply sells replacement tubes you weld on. There have been other threads on the subject too.

yeah definitely the tri point. I did some research, there's a local place that specializes in drive shafts. I called him and he said bring it to him, he has several pieces of the different sizes and he can probably cut out the bad and weld in a new piece, and if that's not the best option, he can sleeve it. He does a lot of them and it's not an unusual thing at all, and is typically way cheaper than buying a new shaft

I do appreciate all the responses! I did try to do a search, but the search feature up there is a google search???? good grief, I already did a google search
